Security Questions

How secure are my file transfers?

File transfers to www.FilesAnywhere.com are sent over the Internet without encryption, just as most email transmissions are. This maximizes transfer performance. However, due to the open nature of the Internet, if some malicious person has access to your network connection, your transmission can potentially be intercepted and the contents of the transfer can be read. Our current network consists of direct connections to top-tier providers, UUNet, Sprint, Level 3, Global Crossing, Verio, Time Warner, Allegiance Telecom and AboveNet.

If the security of your transmission is a high priority, to prevent interception we provide an SSL Login option (secure.filesanywhere.com), which encrypts every packet transmitted to and from our servers to your desktop. The SSL certificate is certified by Verisign and provides a 1024-bit RSA key (this encryption is so strong, it is predicted by RSA that this key would take 3 million years to break using a $10 Million super computer with current technology). This security is also used by banks and the US military to secure document transmission.

WebAdvanced plans are automatically encrypted via the web interface (https://backup.filesanywhere.com).  You can also use SFTP in the Handy Backup for FilesAnywhere program to encrypt your backup transmissions - important for sensitive data.  To do this, choose the SFTP option within the Storage tab of your backup job definition.

You can switch to this security with any of our plans, including the free trial. Simply click the link "Use SSL Login" next to the Enter button before logging in.  You can also require this security each time you Login, in case you forget, by checking the "Require SSL Login" option in your user profile.

Why do I get an SSL warning when trying to Login?

During the new user sign-up, and in the User Profile screen, you may choose the option to "Require SSL Login". As mentioned above, this forces you to Login using the SSL Login option. This option may also be enforced by your designated administrator if you are part of a Workgroup . To avoid this warning, bookmark the secure site, "https://secure.filesanywhere.com", and always use this page when logging in.

If you receive the warning about SSL from your Internet browser, "You are about to view pages over a secure connection", you can avoid this in the future by checking the box "In the future, do not show this warning".

How can I prevent unauthorized access to my files?

For maximum security, use the SSL Login as indicated above. Never give out your password, change your password at least every 90 days, select at least a 7-digit password with numbers and letters, and take precautions with your registered email address.  Employees of the FilesAnywhere service are bonded by confidentiality agreements and do not have authority to view user files at any time without your expressed permission.

Are my account files backed up at your facility?

All account files are backed up at our data center to a separate location.  Because of the way our backups are processed, we do not guarantee that we will be able to restore a file version you have accidentally deleted (our backup may only be a complete snapshot of the current live account state).  However, many times we can.

Your data is already protected in multiple ways and you can add measures to protect your data even further against loss:

Offsite Data Delivery Service

On demand, we copy your data, according to your directions, and ship it to you as quickly as possible.
Directory structures will be maintained.  Files can be encrypted at your option, but this does lengthen
the time required to prepare the disks.  Also, our delivery response time will be longer the more data there
is to transfer.  Guaranteed maximum response times are included below, for any amount of data.

What is involved in an individual file restore?

If you need to restore a file to your location from the FilesAnywhere data set created from your own Handy Backup jobs, there are a variety of ways to download individual files or folders.

If you need a file restored from our secondary internal backups, an email request is all that we need to restore any files.  Again, because of the way our backups are processed, we do not guarantee that we will be able to restore a file version you have accidentally deleted (our backup may only be a complete snapshot of the current live account state).  However, many times we can.  There is a $20 charge to recovery any files (yes, even an individual file), because of the technician's time involved.  Recovered files will be put into a "Recovered" folder on your account.  Please be detailed in your email request for any file recovery.  Email recovery requests must be sent from the registered email address for the account.
